The Library at Wrenn

The Library is an integral part of the School, we understand the importance of students reading regularly for their enjoyment and well-being. We have thousands of books to choose from, with new books added to the stock frequently, the titles are chosen with our students in mind. We also get recommendations from the students, which is a fantastic way of making sure that the books we buy are going to be popular.

We ensure that we have a wide and diverse collection of titles in both fiction and non-fiction. The library has a team of student helpers that help at break and lunchtimes. This is a team of students who love reading and can promote different books to fellow library users.

Special events

We have lots of events which take place in the library, such as:

  • World Book Day
  • Carnegie Medal Book Shadowing
  • Harry Potter Evening
  • Art and craft activities

Library open times

Monday-Thursday 8am – 4pm

Friday 8am – 3.30pm

At break and lunchtimes, the students can come in to do homework on one of the laptops, quiz on their accelerated reader book, read or return library books or have a catch-up with friends. We also have a range of games, including Chess, Uno and Connect Four.

After school activities

We have after school activities in the library, such as Book Club, History Club and an Art Anime Club. Students are also welcome to come in to do their homework. Sometimes they just need a safe place to wait for their parents to collect them at the end of the day.

Accelerated Reader

Here at Wrenn, we use Accelerated Reader to assist students with their reading skills. It is a digital program that helps students and teachers to manage and monitor independent reading practice. Our library books are organised based on the level of difficulty of each book, which allows students to then choose books that are appropriately challenging for their own individual reading level. As a result, students are always encouraged to read books that are the right blend of accessible and challenging. At the end of each book students complete a quiz which allows them to monitor their own reading progress whilst also providing an overview for their teacher of how successfully they have understood what they have read.

Using the Accelerated Reader program, we have termly rewards that ensure students who read regularly for enjoyment are recognised and celebrated. Raffle tickets are given each time a student gets 100% on a quiz and these go into the termly raffle draw to win a range of book vouchers, bookmarks, sweets etc. We also have a ‘millionaires club’ for those students who have read an amazing million words. This is celebrated at the end of the year with a pizza afternoon or a trip out of school.
