Attendance

Attendance plays a crucial role in school attainment, as it directly influences a student’s academic progress, overall achievement, and long-term success. Here are some key reasons why attendance is vital for school attainment:

Of all students who had 100% attendance in KS4, 83.7% achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths.

Of all students who had less than 90% attendance in KS5, 35.6% of pupils achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths.

Learning Opportunities: Regular attendance ensures students have access to consistent and uninterrupted learning opportunities. When students are present in class, they have the chance to actively engage in discussions, ask questions, participate in group activities, and receive immediate feedback from teachers. Each day missed means missing out on valuable instruction and potentially falling behind their peers.

Continuity of Learning: Attending school regularly allows students to build upon previously learned knowledge and skills. Concepts and lessons are often taught progressively, with each lesson building upon the previous one. If students frequently miss school, they may struggle to grasp new material, leading to gaps in their understanding. Regular attendance promotes continuity in learning, enabling students to follow the curriculum effectively.

Active Participation: Active participation in the classroom is vital for student achievement. When students attend school consistently, they have more opportunities to engage in discussions, collaborate with classmates, and actively participate in hands-on activities. This active involvement enhances their comprehension, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities, contributing to improved academic performance.

Social and Emotional Development: Regular attendance also supports students’ social and emotional development. School provides a structured environment for students to interact with peers, develop friendships, and strengthen social skills. Consistent attendance fosters a sense of belonging and community, which positively impacts students’ overall well-being, motivation, and engagement in learning.

Building Habits and Discipline: Regular attendance instils important life skills such as discipline, responsibility, and time management. By attending school consistently, students develop a routine and understand the importance of being punctual and reliable. These habits translate beyond the classroom and contribute to their future success in college, careers, and life.
